DIY Post: All That Glitters Is Gold

Thanks to Pinterest, we have seen a resurgence of the do-it-yourself phenomenon. You don’t have to be a craft genius now, you just have to be willing to try – and to make sure you have the right “tools.”

One of the most important things you can do before any DIY project is conduct a little research. My craft research usually begins and ends with one craft guru – Erica Domesek, aka “P.S. I Made This.” I read her book, follow her blog, and, of course, I am obsessed with her on Instagram. She is the Queen Bee of craftiness, and whatever she says about doing-it-yourself, I do it myself.

Stuck in an airport one day recently, I began flipping through Erica’s book and found the perfect DIY experiment for a craft newbie such as myself. The instructions are simple, and the supplies are few. So follow along, as I tackle my version of the Gold Oxford Shoe. In Erica’s words, “The Midas touch makes everything fabulous.” (Remember: I am still a beginner!)

Your supplies:

•           canvas sneakers

•           gold spray paint

•           masking tape

•           wire cutters

•           scissors

•           shoelace accessories of your choice

Instructions:

Step 1: Find a pair of sneakers, old or new. Mine are from Walmart, $5 buckaroos. You will want to remove the laces and cut out the tongue of the shoe.

Step 2: Make sure you insert some type of stuffing into the sole, just so you don’t paint the inside of your shoes too.

Step 3: Spray-paint your shoes gold or your color of choice. I am using a metallic sharpie to cover the rubber sides of the sole (for a little extra shine).

Step 4: Be creative here. Use stones, small gems, hooks, or graumets in place of the shoelaces. Erica used brass fasteners, and I am using gold and white lace strings and two key and lock charms to accent the shoe.

Drum Roll Please…

The finished product. I will definitely be wearing these in a post very soon. Now go get your DIY on!!

XOXO – Alex
