It’s big, beautiful, spacious, organized, colorful, inviting, and full of shoes, clothes, and handbags. OK, I will stop now. However, if anyone was wondering, I just described my dream closet (for future reference Jason, hehe). Like many, I often dream of the most wonderful things – wonderful fashion things, that is.
As the blogging process has evolved, I’ve started to realize that so many people I blog-stalk have the most killer closets on the planet. In fact, I actually caught myself daydreaming about my “future” closet yesterday. Thanks to Pinterest, my daydreaming got severly clouded by beautiful images of actual, kick-butt closets.
So then came the idea for this post. Although we may never actually have the “dream closet,” we can sure attempt to have a beautiful, organized one. I for one, am about to learn the true meaning of less is more as I move to the Big Apple. My closet is about to endure the most brutal transition of its lifetime. So I’ve done a little research. But first, let’s check out some amazing closets. I need you all to agree with me that it is in fact pretty darn dreamy!
Closet Makeover 101:
Start by Purging
Get rid of the unwanted and unnecessary. My rule: If you haven’t taken it off the hanger to wear since last season, pitch it! Too many closets hold stuff that hasn’t been touched in over a year and that just equals clutter. There’s no reason to hang on to clothes you don’t wear when there are plenty of consignment stores purchasing gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories. So pull out those unused items and drive to your local consignment shop. Or better yet, take them to a Goodwill store or the Salvation Army. There is always someone who would love the shirt that just doesn’t fit right any more.
Welcome the Idea of Containers
So we may never have luxurious shelves and racks for our shoes and bags, but we can sure pretend we do. Thanks to my mom and my current OCD roommate for rubbing off on me, I have now learned to love containers. It keeps things neat and separated without taking up too much room. Don’t splurge on these; give Walmart a try. You can buy a set of 5 or 10 containers for pretty darn cheap. Once you have your storage containers, separate the items that you want kept in bins. Fold or crease them neatly, and pack away. Separating the items by color or by style is always a plus, too! It will definitely help for those early morning searches for what to wear.
Time to Organize
Staying organized is one of the rules I live by, whether it’s an organized life or, yes, an organized closet. I won’t attempt to tell you how to organize your life, but I will give you a closet organization tip. The key to total closet organization is patience. Start from the bottom of the space and work your way up. Even if your closet space is limited, you can make the most of your closet by working your way from floor to ceiling. You are ultimately in charge of your closet. How you start the organization process is how you have to end it and continue from season to season.
Give It a Whirl
Give your re-invented space a try and see if t iss functioning the way you like it. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when finishing the project: Do you have room to give all of your items a good look? Can you reach your must-have items? Can you easily switch out your seasonal pieces? How hard is it to find a pair of shoes?
I think this is a great New Year’s project for anyone to try. Go ahead, make your closet space dreamy and organized!
