So, Alex is now in New York City but is completely overwhelmed with all the unpacking, finding her way around, setting up a bank account, buying furniture, figuring out how to get her laundry done without having to do her laundry … still with me? Oh, and by the way, this is her mom Terri posting for her (with some assistance from sister-in-law Kate). We figured we’ve give her a break while she tries to comprehend all that’s happening.
This is actually Day 3 of the big adventure. It all started Sunday with the flight out of Louisville. Once we arrived in the city, we went straight to her apartment in Hell’s Kitchen (yes, I sent my daughter to live alone in Hell’s Kitchen) and a first meeting with roommate Allyson, an adorable young woman who already knows her way around here and has been more than welcoming.
We quickly surveyed the neighborhood, met the neighbors, including Robert, who is in the new Cindi Lauper musical, Kinky Boots, and Brad the landlord. We headed over to Cosmic Cafe and met Gus, who was super nice, and then to E (for Eatery) and a chance meeting with an up and coming designer – more about him later
The next day we did nothing but shop … and then some. Four hours in Bed, Bath and Beyond alone, buying everything from sheets to a laundry basket (for what, we don’t know) to 50 hangers, which we later learned would only hang up one-third of Alex’s clothes.
Also on Day 3, we took time out of a busy day to meet Alex’s friend Satya, the beautiful young hat and hosiery designer for whom Alex will work some. What a pleasure it was to meet her and to experience New York City through her eyes. More about her later, too. Then it was off to some really neat stores for a little REAL shopping, including at our new favorite store C Wonder. Danon, who is staying with little Scooter while we’re gone, will definitely love what we bought her there!
Finally, today, we headed back to the apartment to start unpacking – mainly the huge box of shoes Alex had shipped up here – Geez! How many shoes does one girl need? And now we’re just about ready to leave her behind – well, not really ready to leave her behind, rather ready to set her free. Not the easiest thing to do, you know. But we think it’s time … actually, it will be time once we introduce her to the launderer around the corner.
Fly, baby girl! Fly! Love Mom and Kate.
P.S. – Enjoy a few pictures of the adventure so far!
