Mom’s Got Style Too…

Yes it’s true, your mom has style too! Her style may be hidden away in the deepest recesses of her closet, but all it needs is a little revamp. That’s where we come in.

Styling is made easy these days because trends truly do have nine lives. Seriously, what she wore in the ’70s has probably made its return and probably more than once.

So give yourself some styling credit, and help a sister – or mom – out. My Mom and I made a pact years ago to keep each other in line…in terms of fashion that is. Our pact includes total honesty when it comes to out-of-date or unflattering looks – including those turtleneck sweaters you still have hanging in the closet, Mom … sorry.

So here’s a styling lesson that can help anyone: your mom, sister, girlfriend, or even your daughter. See how many outfits you can make from just one basic piece. And ladies remember to be honest when styling others; you wouldn’t want to be seen in a “that’s so last year” top either.

» STEP 1: Pick a basic she already owns

This Loft jacket is a perfect place to start. The fabric, cut, and stripe of the jacket create a modern yet sophisticated look that is appropriate for any age. This jacket is easy to dress up or dress down.

»STEP 2: Streamline the look with subtle pieces

You don’t have to step too far outside of the box at the start. Pair your basic with something familiar and comfortable, yet chic too. This pairing is simple and will be a simple ensemble for my Mom to pull off on her own. My Mom loves this Loft white top. She wears it mostly for layering her cardigans and jackets, and it goes perfect under this jacket. I also paired two basic silver pieces of jewelry with the combo to pull out the silver tones of the jacket. If you aren’t afraid to accessorize; jewelry can be an instant makeover.

»STEP 3: Add a pop of color in the mix

Don’t be scared of color! My Mom would typically go for a black camisole to pair with this jacket. Adding color can completely change the look and feel. Accessorize accordingly, and you have yourself an up-to-date outfit. The season ahead is all about owning bold colors. I love the pop of pink and how the jacket appears more youthful.

»STEP 4: Play with prints

When I pulled this print shell out of my Mom’s closet, I saw a look of “oh my gosh” run across her face. Again, think outside of the box when dabbling with prints. You can pair them with more pieces in your closet than you might think. Because of the colors in this printed shell, I was able to accent the jacket and introduce a little green into the mix. This definitely makes for a night out with the girlfriends look.

»Call to action: OK, so now it’s your turn. Play stylist for a day, and makeover your closet or someone else’s. You never know how many outfits you can make from just one piece. Think about “Sex and the City”: Carrie and the girls are out with the old and in with the new (plus throw in a few bottles of champagne). Make it fun, and make it stylish.

»Shop Now: Need in on the blazer trend? Here are a few of my favorite places to shop for blazers, jackets, and outterwear. Asos, Kohl’s, Jcrew, Rachel Roy, Target.

XOXO – Alex
